New Conference, New Attitude

Senior Heidi Steckbauer

Sept. 18, 2007

9/18/07 - OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - It is a new era for the Mid-America Christian University softball program. The Lady Evangels begin play this year as a part of the Sooner Athletic Conference, one of the toughest NAIA softball conferences in the country.

"We are excited to be a part of such a great conference," Women's Softball Coach Jerald Lewis said. "We have the talent to be competitive so we are looking for good things to happen this season."

The Lady Evangels enter the fall softball schedule with a wealth of talent, but not a lot of experience. The team features only two seniors and five upper classmen. Despite the youth, the Lady Evangels carry momentum from a 2007 season which saw the team set a school record for wins.

"We had a great season last year," Lewis said. "Our young players stepped up and our older players provided much needed leadership. We are maturing as a program and I think we have the players in place to make the transition to the highly competitive Sooner Athletic Conference."

The 2007-2008 team features quality returnees at key positions and several highly touted freshmen who hope to contribute immediately. The Lady Evangels have begun their fall training schedule with each day beginning with conditioning at 6:00 a.m.

"The girls have had a great attitude," Lewis said. "They have a strong work ethic and desire to get better. We are bringing in quality student athletes and that is what it is going to take to achieve the goals we have set for ourselves."

The fall season gets started in early September with a busy fall schedule. MACU will travel to University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma on September 18th, Cameron University on September 22nd, Southwestern Oklahoma State College on October 2nd and Rose State College on October 9th.

"It is a tough schedule, but that is what we need in order to improve," Lewis said.
