11.6.09 - Oklahoma City, Okla.- The Mid-America Christian University women's basketball team turned a 20 point deficit into a 61-59 win over Southwestern College on Thursday evening at the Gaulke Activity Center. MACU, now 2-0 overall, contributed to an overall a sloppy first half committing 20 turnovers while shooting 15 percent from the field. Playing in their season opener, Southwestern was also plagued with turnovers in the first half, giving the ball away 21 times. They shot 59 percent from the field and 66 percent from the free throw line, giving them the 36-25 lead going into half time. SC turned their 11 point lead into a 22 point advantage quickly in the second half. MACU scored nine unanswered point to bring them within 10 points of SC (40-50). Two made free throw made by junior Melissa Aguilar made it a nine point game with eight minutes to play. In the next play Aguilar stole the ball, resulting in a Brittany Johnson lay-up (46-53). Gaining momentum, the Lady Evangels out-scored SC 15-7. With time running out, Michelle Hardimon sunk two crucial free throws leaving MACU to trail by just one point. Jordyan Cossman of Southwestern made one of two free throws, giving them a two point lead. With 38 seconds left on the clock, Hardimon dished the ball out to Johnson who tied the game with a lay-up. SC miss a shot, Karina Trindade was there to rebound and quickly get the Lady Evangels back on the attack with 33 second left in the game. Hardimon gave a perfect pass to Egidija Busaite whose lay-up proved to be the game winner with just under 30 seconds to play. Brittany Johnson led the Lady Evangels with 19 points on the night followed by Michelle Hardimon who contributed 11 points. MACU out-rebounded SC 38-27 with Trindade leading the team will 11 boards. The Lady Evangels improved their percentages in the second half, shooting 47 percent from the field and 88 percent from the line. The Lady Evangels will continue to play at home and try to extend their winning streak on Tuesday, November 10th at 5:30 p.m. when they take on Hillsdale College. |
