11.6.09 - Oklahoma City, Okla. The Mid-America Christian University men's basketball team opened their season with a convincing 84-57 win over Southwestern College on Thursday evening at the Gaulke Activity Center. With a year of the MACU system under his belt, sophomore Charlie Shorter led the team in scoring with 17 points on the night. Brandon Williams was the only other Evangel in double-digits with 16 points. SC was able to keep the score close in the first half. The game opened with the Evangels trailing by four points. MACU came back to tie but SC countered taking a seven point lead with under five minutes to play in the first half. With 3:30 to play in the first, George Haynes hit a field goal to knot up the score (25-25). MACU went on a 10-2 run, giving them an eight point advantage going into intermission. With 13 minutes to play in the second half MACU took control of the game without looking back, out-scoring SC 31-18 The Evangels dominated the boards 45-18. They shot 70 percent from the free throw line and 54 percent from the field. The Evangels continue to play at home on Tuesday, November 10th when they face Hillsdale College at 7:30 p.m. |
