PLAINVIEW, Texas – The Mid-America Christian University volleyball team headed into action on Friday evening at Wayland Baptist University knowing they had drawn a tough assignment for their Sooner Athletic Conference opening match. By the end of the evening, despite putting up a good fight, the Lady Evangels were unable to find the result they wanted.

Wayland Baptist (7-2, 1-0) swept MACU (1-5, 0-1) in three sets, taking the match 25-14, 25-16, 25-16.

MACU started well, taking three of the first four points, and for much of the first set, the teams battled closely. Wayland Baptist opened a 12-7 lead with a 5-0 run, but MACU answered with a 5-0 spurt of their own to knot things back up. After MACU tied the score at 13, however, it was all downhill in the frame, as WBU held MACU without a kill for the remainder of the set on their way to the 25-14 win.

WBU used that momentum to race out to a 5-0 lead, and after that MACU was never closer than four points, as the Flying Queens took the set 25-16 to take a 2-0 lead in the match. MACU battled fiercely in the third set, keeping the margin close through the first half of the stanza, but with the score standing at 14-12 WBU, the Flying Queens used a 4-0 run to put some distance between themselves and MACU. The Lady Evangels were not able to recover, and the set went to WBU 25-16 to complete the 3-0 sweep of the match.

Laurel Church led the Lady Evangels with 11 kills in the match, Melissa Hoppal had 17 assists, Gabrielle Poling notched 13 digs, and Ryann Hale also had nine assists and 10 digs in the match. The Lady Evangels struggled attacking the ball, hitting .036 for the match.

MACU will finish their swing west on Saturday when they head north to Goodwell, Oklahoma to take on the Aggies of Oklahoma Panhandle State University (3-5, 1-0) at Noon.
